[Who are the people who do doll makeup? Where do they do it? We'll answer all those questions!]
Cheryl Austin is a female artist from California, USA.
As an artist, she began her career under the name "SDink" and rose to fame when she showed off beautiful, realistic makeup in promotional photos for Dollshe Craft, a long-established Korean Maker founded in 2003.
We conducted a special interview to discover the secrets of the delicate makeup style that is unique to women!
SDink (Cheryl Austin), Interviewer: DOLK staff

■DOLK Staff (hereinafter D): What made you start to like dolls, SDink?
■SDink: I've always loved collecting dolls, but when a friend showed me a ball-jointed doll, I immediately fell in love with them and started collecting one by one.

■D: Please tell us what inspired you to start wearing makeup!
■SDink: The friend I mentioned earlier told me about "Den of Angels," a community for ball-jointed doll collectors.
As I was doing some research, I discovered that collectors customize their own dolls, and I had the idea to try airbrush makeup.
I practiced over and over again using my own dolls, and then my friends started asking me to do makeup for their ball-jointed dolls, and then I started doing makeup on commission for "Den of Angels."

■D: When did you start doing makeup for ball-jointed dolls?
■SDink: I've been doing this since 2006. Every day I research how to make accessories, wigs, and costumes for ball-jointed dolls.

■D: You were in charge of the makeup for Dollshe Craft's dolls for us, DOLK. Please tell us what you particularly like about them and if there was anything you put your heart and soul into while working on them.
■SDink: I finally completed it, hoping that DOLK would like it.
This was an ambitious piece that challenged me to apply transparent makeup on top of translucent resin, and as I went through a process of trial and error, it ended up taking a lot of time.
I also like makeup that brings out the best in the doll model. I always put my heart into each and every doll, but I'm not always 99% satisfied. I'm never satisfied, and I always want to be able to create something better.

■D: What is the origin of your artist name Sdink?
■SDink: My favorite cat is named Dink. I used to be an artist who draws 2D pictures (not three-dimensional but two-dimensional), so I had a website for my art. The website was called "Studio Dink", so we shortened it to "SDink".

Now I work as a professional 3D character artist, so I hardly ever draw 2D pictures anymore. It's a job I enjoy, but sometimes I find it tough because of my personality and my particular preferences.

■D: Please tell us the steps for your makeup application.
■SDink: First, check that the head is clean.
Then spray with MSC (Mineral Silk Powder) and airbrush the base.
I draw the eyebrows with pastels, then add the details with acrylics. Once I've finished the details, I attach the false eyelashes.

D: What tools do you use for your makeup?
■SDink: I use tools randomly depending on the situation, but I often use tools from Vallejo (a Spanish brand pronounced Vallejo) or Golden.
For coloring I use both airbrush and acrylics, as well as pastels, mostly from Unisom.
I also use Tamiya gloss.

■D: Thank you for answering the questions I was wondering about!
It was very educational to hear such valuable stories as how she got started in doll makeup and the attention to detail she puts into her makeup.
I look forward to seeing SDink's realistic makeup in the future!
